Transit Route Through Our Ward
The shovel has just hit the ground for the first phase of light rail, but time is already running out before the crucial decisions are made on the second phase - the one that has a direct impact on our ward. The proposed new transit connection that will bring light rail to the new Baseline Station will effect all of us, however, it will have the most direct impact on people who live between Baseline, Maitland, the Queensway and Greenbank.
Despite the Mayor having recently pushed back the Transit Committee vote by one month, timelines are tight. We only have a strict window of time in which to respond. In fact, Committee recommendations selecting the corridor and option will be voted on in mid July.
To ensure you have the best opportunity to respond I held a public meeting on Thursday, May 9th from 6:30pm-8:30pm at Ben Franklin Place Chambers, 101 Centrepointe Drive. Transit officials presented the three proposed options for bringing Light Rail from its centre-west leg, south through our ward to connect to the new Baseline Station. There was some concerns about traffic flow, both vehicular and pedestrian and a focus on the least impact for the environment and the surrounding community. Over all the three proposed routes through Iris to Baseline Station were positively received. Particularly option two with the low vehicle bridge crossing over Iris. The staff recommended option maintains the current flow and safety of Iris street while having the minimum impact on the creek and local soccer field.
If you missed the meeting to enjoy game 5 of the Senators vs Habs or for any other reason, don't worry its not too late to make your comments and have staff look into your suggestions. Please take a minute to fill out my survey by choosing which of the three proposals you prefer, it is important that we get as much input as possible in order to direct staff to the best possible western LRT plan. Please stand by, it will be up on the site within the next few days. In the mean time I urge you to email or call my office with your questions, comments and concerns and I will ensure the proper City staff receive all your feedback.
Finally please keep an eye out on this site and possibly in my newsletter or flyers for the end date of the comment period and updates to the plans as they come in.
Below and to the right are the three main staff recommended corridors that directly affect our Ward for you to review.
